Microsoft Street and Trips 2001

While I'm no great fan of Microsoft products, I have to admit I love this program. I've used practically every version of Delorme's Street Atlas and AAA's Map'n'Go and in all cases I've found them severely lacking in at least one important, at least to motorcyclists, respect. There was no way to easily move a trip to a specific road.

You know what I mean. You see a nice squiggly little line that you think would be perfect for your trip but there is no way of telling the damn program to take that road. I hate that! Finally with ST2001 it's easy to jump on that road. Just grab a section of road the program did map for you and drop it onto the new road that you want. The one caveat is that you'll have to do this multiple times since most roads, in this as well as most map programs, consist of multiple segments. For example, a 30 mile stretch of a road may take 2-3 drag and drops to incorporate it into your route. If you've ever used the other programs you know that this minor inconvenience - it is still a big improvement. Delorme's latest products use a similar function - Route Via, but I think the MS implementation is easier to use.

You can also specify route preferences. This allows you to tell the program to avoid interstates like the plague and to stick to the back roads. Delorme's products have long allowed this but I still found that the program preferred to route to interstates. The only way I found to avoid this with Delorme's products was to lower interstate speeds to 5mph or so and jack up backroad speeds to 100mph. You then tell the program to take the fastest route possible. This would give you the back roads you desire, but your trip itinerary (time/speeds/days) would be horribly off. ST2001 seems more than happy to obey my command and to stay the hell off the interstates. That right there is worth the price of admission - which is a very cheap at under $30 not including the $20 rebate.

The other thing I really like about this program is that it allows you to export your trip itinerary to html for posting on your site. Check out my Rides page for an example.

ST2001 also gives you the ability to update roads, construction, hotel and restaurant data via the web. Most map programs allow this now so it's not a big plus for this program, but I thought I should mention it.

It's been pointed out to me that ST2001 has a problem with Lat/Longs. Since I don't use a GPS unit I never noticed (nor cared).
